Industrial Ethernet migration into the I/O level
of automation networks to grow by 27.5%

The market for wireless devices and equipment in process manufacturing is expected to grow over $1.1 billion in the next four years, a growth rate over 30% per year, according to an ARC Advisory Group Study.

Deployment of wireless in continuous process manufacturing industries (e.g. chemicals, oil and gas, oil refining, electric power, renewable energy, wind energy, mining and metals) has lagged behind the automotive and aerospace industries, mainly because process plants are often larger and located mainly outdoors, and because the presence of dangerous and potentially explosive materials mandates use of equipment carrying special certifications.

Today it accounts for only a small portion of the total market but, according to ARC, it will become the largest segment during the next five years as the market absorbs a deluge of new wireless sensing products that comply with wireless versions of industrial standards.  Wireless LAN use will also grow rapidly, spurred by the introduction of new access point products that can safely be installed in hazardous environments.

Ethernet's migration into I/O.  Meanwhile, the continued migration of industrial Ethernet into the I/O realm of the automation network hierarchy is clearly not slowing in the near future. The ARC study forecasts the market to continue to grow at close to 30% per year over the next five years.

Now a staple at the control level of the automation hierarchy, the advent of automation-applicable standards, intelligent implementation strategies, and overall improvements in product reliability have made Ethernet a lead option in even the most demanding motion control appliications.

Availability of a single network technology that enables vertical integration throughout the enterprise over the same network, at least at the lower tiers of the network stack, is an increasingly-compelling value proposition for manufacturers.

The Ethernet worldwide availability and support by both major IT and automation vendors also makes it attractive relative to dedicated industrial markets.
